VA service-connected disability compensation provides monthly payments to Veterans and their families for disabilities caused by injuries or events during military service, helping address the physical, mental, and emotional impacts of their service.

Securing fair VA disability compensation can be difficult. Claims may be wrongfully denied, underpaid, or involve conditions that appear years after discharge. Because benefits depend on accurate disability ratings, having an experienced advocate is critical to ensuring you receive the compensation you deserve.
VA benefits may be available through several different claim paths, depending on a Veteran’s service history, health conditions, and family circumstances.
Previously Denied or Underpaid Claims
Many Veterans were denied benefits or assigned ratings that failed to reflect the true severity of their conditions. In some cases, new laws and updated VA policies now allow these claims to be reopened or increased.
Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
Veterans who are unable to maintain steady employment due to service-connected disabilities may qualify for Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) even if their disability rating is below 100%. This allows eligible Veterans to receive compensation at the 100% disability rate.
Toxic Exposure & Environmental Hazard Claims
Veterans exposed to hazardous environments during service may qualify for benefits related to long-term health conditions. Many of these conditions develop years or decades after service, which is why new VA rules are critical for affected Veterans today.
Survivor & Dependent (DIC) Claims
Widows, widowers, and eligible dependents may qualify for benefits if a Veteran’s death was connected to service-related injuries, illnesses, or toxic exposure. These claims can provide ongoing monthly compensation and other survivor benefits.
In 2022, Congress passed the Honoring Our PACT Act, a landmark law that significantly expanded VA benefits for Veterans exposed to toxic substances during military service.
The VA now presumes service connection for many conditions that were previously difficult or impossible to prove. Veterans no longer have to show direct proof linking certain illnesses to exposure. Survivors may now qualify for benefits even if their Veteran loved one passed away years ago.
These changes mean that many Veterans and families who were once denied benefits may now be eligible.
